Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination declares that Australian military service in Operation HERRICK counts as warlike service under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986.

What this means:

Operation HERRICK was Australia's involvement in the UK-led contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan.
If you served in Afghanistan (including its airspace) as part of this operation from 1 September 2004 onwards, your service is legally classified as "warlike."

Why this matters:

Warlike service is a special legal category that determines eligibility for veterans' benefits. It typically affects:
- Disability compensation rates (usually higher than peacetime service)
- Service pension eligibility
- Access to certain healthcare and rehabilitation services
The classification ensures veterans who served in hostile environments receive appropriate entitlements under the Act.

Who is covered:

Australian Defence Force members and certain other personnel who served in the specified area during the operation period.
