Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination classifies Operation Enduring Freedom: Afghanistan as warlike service under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986.

What this means:

Australian Defence Force members who served in this operation are entitled to specific veterans' benefits, including disability compensation at higher rates typically reserved for combat service
"Warlike service" is a legal category that recognises involvement in actual combat or high-risk military operations, triggering different (usually more favourable) eligibility rules than peacetime service

Who is covered:

Personnel who served in Afghanistan and its superjacent airspace (the airspace above it)
Coverage applies retrospectively from 7 October 2001 onwards (the date the operation began), ensuring veterans who served from the start of the conflict receive appropriate entitlements

This instrument ensures veterans of the US-led Global War on Terror in Afghanistan receive the correct compensation and benefits under Australia's veterans' support scheme.
