Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination declares that Australian military service with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan counts as warlike service under veterans' law.

What this means:

Australian Defence Force members who served in the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan (and its airspace) from 11 August 2003 are entitled to higher-tier veterans' benefits and disability compensation.
Warlike service is a legal category that attracts more generous entitlements than peacetime or peacekeeping service.

Who it affects: Current and former ADF members who served in Afghanistan under ISAF during the specified period.

Why it matters: It ensures these veterans receive the appropriate compensation and healthcare benefits reflecting the combat nature of their deployment, with the determination backdated to cover service from 2003 onwards.
