Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination declares that Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Operation Augury are eligible for non-warlike service benefits under veterans' law.

What this means: Operation Augury involved ADF personnel working in Jordan (and its airspace) to help understand Islamist terrorist threats against Australia and the region, starting from 4 July 2014.

Why it matters: Under veterans' law, military service is classified into different types—warlike, non-warlike, or peacetime. This classification affects what compensation, pension, and health care benefits veterans can access if they are injured or become ill due to their service. By declaring this operation as "non-warlike," the government ensures that personnel who served in Jordan receive the appropriate level of support and entitlements, which are more generous than peacetime service but different from warlike service.

Who is covered: ADF members who served in Jordan or its airspace during Operation Augury from 4 July 2014 onwards.
