Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This notice allows the Department of Veterans' Affairs to automatically waive (write off) small debts owed by veterans or their families when the amount is less than $200.

Why it matters: Without this notice, every small overpayment or debt would require individual assessment and paperwork. By setting a $200 threshold, the Department can efficiently clear minor debts that would cost more to recover than they're worth.

Who it affects: Veterans, their dependents, or estates who owe money to the Commonwealth under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986.

The technical bit: Under the Act, the Minister can specify "classes of debts" that can be waived (forgiven). This notice creates a class: debts under $200. It also revokes an earlier notice from 1988 that likely set a different threshold.
