Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This legal instrument classifies military service in East Timor as warlike service under veterans' law.

What it does: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served on Operation Tanager between 20 February 2000 and 19 May 2002 in East Timor and its surrounding waters are recognised as having rendered "warlike service."

Why this matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986, the category of service affects what benefits veterans can claim. "Warlike service" typically provides access to higher disability pensions and broader medical coverage than peacetime service. This ensures eligible personnel receive appropriate compensation and support for their deployment during this period.

Key details:

Who is covered: ADF members allotted for service during the specified dates
Where: East Timor and its territorial sea
Replaces: An earlier determination from February 2000 that covered the same operation
