Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This official determination classifies military service during Operation Stabilise (the Australian-led intervention in East Timor) as "warlike service" under veterans' law.

Who it affects: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in East Timor between 16 September 1999 and 23 February 2000.

Coverage area: The determination applies to:

East Timor itself
The sea area that was Indonesian territorial waters adjacent to East Timor as of 16 September 1999

Why it matters: Being classified as "warlike service" (rather than peacekeeping or non-warlike service) affects the level of compensation and benefits veterans can claim. This includes disability pensions, medical treatment eligibility, and service pensions. The classification recognises the higher-risk nature of this operation following East Timor's vote for independence from Indonesia.

Note: This determination replaces an earlier version from December 1999.
