Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document officially classifies Operation RIVERBANK as warlike service for Australian military personnel.

What this means: Under veterans' law, military service is categorized into different types (warlike, non-warlike, or peacetime). This determination ensures that ADF members who served on this specific United Nations mission in Iraq receive the appropriate veterans' entitlements and benefits that come with warlike service status—typically more comprehensive compensation and support than peacetime service.

Who is covered:

Defence Force members assigned to the Australian contribution to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI)
Service rendered on or from 21 July 2008
In the area of Iraq

Key detail: Although this determination was signed on 2 June 2009, it applies retrospectively from 21 July 2008, meaning anyone who served during that period is covered.
