Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination classifies service in Operation Provide Comfort as warlike service under veterans' law.

What it does: If you served as an ADF member patrolling the Iraq No-Fly Zones between 11 August 1991 and 15 December 1996, this declaration means your service is officially recognised as "warlike."

Why this matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act, "warlike service" unlocks higher levels of compensation and support, including:

Enhanced disability pensions
Repatriation health care (medical treatment for service-related conditions)
Other veteran benefits not available for peacetime service

Key details:

Where: Iraq (the designated area of operations)
When: The determination covers the period 11 August 1991 to 15 December 1996
Backdated: It took effect from 16 April 2007 (before it was signed in October 2007), meaning eligible veterans could claim benefits retrospectively from that date
