Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Determination declares that Australian military service during Operation JURAL counts as warlike service under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986.

What this means:

Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served with British forces patrolling the Iraq No-Fly-Zones between 30 June 1991 and 12 January 2003 are recognised as having performed warlike service.
Why this matters: "Warlike service" is a special legal category that gives veterans access to enhanced benefits, including disability compensation and full medical treatment coverage from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (rather than just standard peacetime benefits).
The Determination applies to service in Iraq while assigned to United Kingdom coalition force elements.

Important timing:

Although signed on 15 October 2007, this Determination is taken to have commenced on 16 April 2007 (retrospective effect). This means veterans can claim entitlements backdated to that date.
