Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination declares that Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Operation Falconer (Australia's military contribution to the 2003 Iraq War) are eligible for "warlike service" benefits under veterans' law.

Who it affects:

ADF members officially assigned ("allotted") to Operation Falconer
Service must have occurred between 18 March 2003 and 22 July 2003
Must have served within a specific geographic box bounded by coordinates (roughly covering Iraq, the Persian Gulf, and surrounding regions between latitudes 10°N–38°N and longitudes 32°E–68°E)

Why it matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986, being classified as warlike service (rather than peacetime or "non-warlike" service) determines eligibility for disability compensation rates and other benefits. Warlike service typically attracts higher compensation and more favourable eligibility rules.

Note: This instrument revokes (replaces) an earlier determination from 19 March 2003, likely to adjust the end date or boundaries as the operation progressed.
