Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This determination classifies Australian Defence Force (ADF) service on Operation Trek as "non-warlike service" under veterans' law.

Who it affects: ADF members assigned to Operation Trek in the Solomon Islands (including its territorial waters) on or after 4 November 2000.

Why it matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986, military service is categorised as either warlike, non-warlike, or peacetime. This classification determines:

What types of injuries or conditions qualify for disability pensions
The level of compensation available to veterans who were harmed during the operation
Access to certain rehabilitation and support services

Non-warlike service typically covers peacekeeping, humanitarian, or stability operations where there is some risk but not the same level of hostile conflict as "warlike" operations. This determination ensures veterans of Operation Trek can access benefits appropriate to the nature of their deployment.
