Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This document officially declares that Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Fiji during Operation Quickstep performed what the law calls "non-warlike service".

Who it affects:

ADF personnel deployed to Fiji between 31 October 2006 and 22 December 2006.

Where:

Fiji and its surrounding waters and airspace, including the land, internal waters, territorial sea, archipelagic waters, and exclusive economic zone.

Why it matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act, military service is classified as either "warlike" or "non-warlike." This determination ensures that veterans who served during this specific operation can access the particular benefits and entitlements attached to the non-warlike category (which are different from those for warlike service).

Timing note: Although signed on 22 November 2007, this determination applies retrospectively from 11 September 2007.

In short, this is an administrative instrument that connects a specific six-week deployment to Fiji with the veterans' compensation and benefits framework.
