Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This determination officially classifies Australian military service in Sierra Leone during Operation HUSKY as "non-warlike service" under veterans' law.

Who it affects: Current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who were assigned to the International Military Advisory and Training Team (IMATT) in Sierra Leone between 15 January 2001 and 28 February 2003.

Why it matters: Under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986, the type of service you performed determines what compensation and pension benefits you can claim. "Non-warlike service" sits in the middle tier—it's more than routine peacetime duty, but less than active combat (warlike service). This classification means eligible veterans can claim disability pensions and medical treatment for injuries or illnesses connected to this specific deployment.

Key change: This replaces an earlier 2004 determination, updating the official record for this operation.
