This determination classifies military service in Sudan as non-warlike service for veterans' benefits purposes.

Who is affected: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served on Operation Azure in Sudan from 10 April 2005 onwards.

What it does: The instrument declares that service in the specified area—Sudan, its territorial waters, and airspace—is officially recognised as "non-warlike service" under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986.

Why this matters: The classification of service determines what compensation, pensions, and healthcare support veterans can access. "Non-warlike service" sits between "warlike service" (combat operations) and peacetime service. It typically covers dangerous deployments that do not meet the threshold of active combat, affecting eligibility for disability pensions and treatment benefits for personnel deployed to Sudan during this operation.
