Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This official declaration (called a 'determination') classifies military service in Operation Anode — the Australian-led peacekeeping and stabilisation mission in the Solomon Islands — as 'non-warlike service' under veterans' law.

Who it affects: Australian Defence Force (ADF) members assigned to serve in Operation Anode within the Solomon Islands (including land, territorial waters, and airspace) on or after 24 July 2003.

Why it matters: The Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986 treats 'non-warlike service' differently from 'warlike service' (which covers combat operations). This classification determines eligibility for specific disability pensions, compensation, and healthcare benefits. By declaring this operation non-warlike, the Minister ensures personnel who served in this hazardous peacekeeping environment can access the appropriate entitlements and repatriation benefits tied to that category of service.
