The EC alternative is closest to the primary pathway and likely simplest for European manufacturers. The Japanese alternative is specific to Japanese domestic market engines and may require additional OBD engineering if reagent is used. A manufacturer with a global platform should test all relevant pathways and select the one with the lowest combined cost of testing, hardware modification and regulatory risk. Given the prohibition on defeat devices, the manufacturer should also conduct a legal audit of all emission control strategies to ensure none could be classified as a defeat device under the European definition.
