What it does
This instrument sets technical requirements for trailer antilock braking systems, their installation, electrical interface to the towing vehicle, and marking examples for certain brake control devices. The extract supplied contains three principal operational parts: performance requirements for antilock systems (identified as the Brake System and Antilock System), installation requirements specifying which axles must be fitted with antilock control, and electrical connector and signalling requirements for the trailer-to-towing-vehicle interface. It also contains illustrative marking examples for mechanically controlled and air-pressure-controlled devices in compressed air brake systems.
Mechanically, the Performance Requirements (labelled in the text as 1.1-1.2.1 and related subclauses) mandate that at speeds exceeding 15 km/h, the wheels on specified axles must remain unlocked when a defined "Control Signal" of 1.0 "E" (650 kPa) is suddenly applied from specified initial speeds (40 km/h ± tolerances and at least 80 km/h) on a uniform-friction surface, and that brief periods of wheel locking are permitted provided vehicle stability is not affected (see cl 1.2 and 1.2.2). The Antilock System must not be adversely affected by magnetic or electric fields (cl 1.1.3). Testing is to be run with the trailer laden to both "Lightly Laden Test Mass" and "Maximum Loaded Test Mass" and under general and particular test conditions cross-referenced to clauses 9 and 10 (cl 1.2.1).
Installation Requirements (cl 2.1.1-2.1.3) require fitting an Antilock System to each single axle, at least one axle in any tandem group, and at least two axles in any triaxle group.
Electrical System requirements (labelled cl 3.1-3.4) require the antilock system to be powered from a 12 V or 24 V supply via connectors conforming to DIN 72570 (12 V) or ISO/DIN 7638:1996 (12/24 V). The connector wiring and minimum rated capacities are specified per pin for both 12 V and 24 V configurations (cl 3.2.1-3.2.2). The trailer must signal most electrical failures or supply interruptions to the towing vehicle by switching Pin 5 to negative (cl 3.3). On initial energisation the trailer must connect Pin 5 to negative and disconnect it not less than two seconds later or no later than when trailer speed reaches 15 km/h provided no defect is present (cl 3.4).
