Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This short law removes outdated restrictions on public gatherings from the ACT statute books.

In plain terms: It cancels (repeals) the Unlawful Assemblies Ordinance 1937, which previously made certain types of public gatherings illegal. Once this law takes effect, the old rules about what counts as an 'unlawful assembly' no longer apply.

Who it affects: Anyone in the ACT who might gather in public. Before this law, some gatherings could have been deemed 'unlawful' under the 1937 rules. After this law, those specific restrictions are gone (though other public order laws still apply).

Why it matters: This is a 'housekeeping' measure that removes old, potentially undemocratic restrictions on the right to assemble that date back to 1937.
