Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises a one-off payment of £500,000 from the Australian Government to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

The money is drawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the Commonwealth's main account holding tax revenue and national income). This is a straightforward grant, not a loan or ongoing funding commitment.

Who it affects:

Australian taxpayers: The funds come from public money
UNICEF: The UN agency receiving the grant to provide emergency relief
Children in crisis: Ultimately, children in war-affected and disadvantaged areas who received food, medicine, and shelter through this funding

Why it matters: This 1949 legislation demonstrates Australia's early support for the United Nations and international humanitarian efforts following World War II. It formalises a significant contribution to global child welfare at a time when UNICEF was actively addressing post-war emergencies.
