Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This regulation repeals (cancels) earlier rules from 1983 that granted special legal protections to people attending the Twelfth Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.

What it does:

Removes the 1983 regulations that gave diplomatic-style protections (called privileges and immunities — things like immunity from being sued or arrested, and tax exemptions) to delegates and officials at the 1983 Antarctic Treaty meeting held in Australia
Cleans up the statute books by removing spent regulations that were only needed temporarily while the meeting was happening

Who it affects:

No one directly, anymore. It simply tidies up old laws that had already served their purpose once the meeting concluded.

Why it matters:

Keeps the law neat by removing temporary rules that are no longer needed
Demonstrates how Australia implements its international obligations under the Antarctic Treaty system by formally ending the special legal status that was granted to the meeting
