Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: These regulations set mandatory safety standards for baby walkers sold in Australia to reduce the risk of injury to infants.

Key details:

A baby walker is defined as a wheeled frame that supports a baby who hasn't learned to walk yet, with their feet touching the ground, propelled by the baby's movement.
Rather than spelling out technical rules directly, the regulations incorporate by reference specific sections of an American safety standard (ASTM F977-00, published July 2000).
All baby walkers sold in Australia must comply with sections 6.1, 6.4, and 9.3 of that standard.

Who it affects: Manufacturers, importers, and retailers of baby walkers in Australia.

Why it matters: Baby walkers pose serious risks to infants—including falls down stairs and collisions with hazards. These rules ensure products meet independently tested safety benchmarks before reaching consumers.
