Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a commencement proclamation—a formal legal instrument that 'switches on' part of an Act on a specific date.

What it does:

The Governor-General formally declares that Schedule 1 of the Trade Practices Amendment (Australian Consumer Law) Act (No. 1) 2010 commences (starts operating) on 1 July 2010.
Schedule 1 contains the substantive Australian Consumer Law—the national rules governing consumer guarantees, unfair contract terms, misleading conduct, and product safety.

Why this matters: Although Parliament had already passed the Act, the new consumer protection rules were not yet legally enforceable. This proclamation is the legal trigger that activates them, making the Australian Consumer Law binding on businesses and consumers nationwide from 1 July 2010.

In short: This is the official 'go-live' announcement that brought the Australian Consumer Law into effect.
