Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This regulation is regulatory housekeeping that cleans up Australia's statute books by removing a large number of outdated rules.

What it does:

Repeals 87 old regulations made between 1958 and 1985 that governed Australia's trade commissioners (government representatives who promote Australian exports and business interests overseas)
Takes effect on 1 October 1985

Who it affects:

Staff of the Department of Trade (now part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and Australian trade commissioners working abroad
Removes old administrative rules about appointments, salaries, allowances, and working conditions that had accumulated over 27 years

Why it matters: Rather than managing dozens of separate, outdated rules covering individual appointments or minor administrative changes, this sweeps them all away in one go. It likely reflects a shift to a new, consolidated framework for managing trade commissioner services—replacing the patchwork of individual regulations with a simpler, more modern system.
