Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a commencement proclamation — the legal instrument that officially "switches on" the Tourism Australia Act 2004.

What it does:

Sets 1 July 2004 as the date when sections 3 to 64 of the Act come into force (commence)
These sections contain the substantive provisions establishing Tourism Australia (the national government body responsible for marketing Australia as a tourist destination)
Without this proclamation, the Act would remain dormant — passed by Parliament but not yet legally active

Who issued it:

The Governor-General (acting on the advice of the Federal Executive Council) signed this on 24 June 2004 under section 2(1) of the Act itself

Why it matters: This document marks the legal birth of Tourism Australia in its modern statutory form, giving the organisation the legal authority to begin operations, employ staff, and enter into contracts.
