Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Notice sets a minimum size limit for Moreton Bay Bugs caught in the Torres Strait prawn fishery to protect breeding populations.

What it bans:

Taking, processing, or carrying Moreton Bay Bugs (crustaceans of the genus Thenus) that are smaller than 75 millimetres across their shell (carapace width).
Measurements must be taken at the widest point of the shell.

Who it affects:

Commercial fishers operating in the Torres Strait prawn fishery area.
Important exception: People engaged in traditional fishing (Torres Strait Islanders fishing for traditional purposes) are exempt from this size restriction.

Why it exists:

This "size limit" rule ensures young bugs can reproduce before being harvested, preventing overfishing and keeping the fishery sustainable for future generations.
