Commonwealth legislation
This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.
What this does: This law sets technical safety rules for devices called Line Isolation Devices (LIDs). These are pieces of equipment that sit between Airservices Australia's air traffic control systems (like radar or navigation towers) and regular telephone networks.
Who it affects: Mainly Airservices Australia (the government body managing air traffic), telecommunications companies, and manufacturers of these isolation devices.
Why it matters: It ensures that when sensitive aviation safety equipment connects to public phone networks, there's proper electrical isolation. This prevents interference from the phone network disrupting critical air traffic control systems, keeping air travel safe.
How it works: Rather than listing all the technical specifications directly in the law, it simply requires compliance with a technical document named "ACA TS 025 – 1997" that was approved in November 1997.
