Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is the "start button" for Australia's telephone numbering rules.

On 1 August 2015, this instrument switched on sections 5 to 135 of the Telecommunications Numbering Plan 2015—the rulebook that dictates how phone numbers are allocated to telcos, transferred between providers, and managed across the country.

What this actually does:

It doesn't contain the number rules themselves (those are in the Numbering Plan)
It simply tells everyone: "The new rules start on 1 August 2015"

Who it affects:

Phone companies (telcos)—they need to know exactly when compliance starts
Businesses buying blocks of numbers
Everyone who makes phone calls—the Numbering Plan governs the structure of Australian phone numbers

Made by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on 24 July 2015, this procedural notice ensures there's no legal confusion about when the new regime kicked in.
