Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This law authorises a one-time federal payment of £400,000 to Tasmania to help balance the state's budget during the 1934–35 financial year.

What it does:

The payment: Transfers £400,000 from the Commonwealth to Tasmania as 'financial assistance' (essentially a grant to support state finances during the Great Depression)
Timing: Paid in 12 equal monthly instalments throughout the year starting 1 July 1934
Source: The money comes from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the government's main bank account)

Why it matters: This is a classic example of 'Section 96 grants' — federal funding to states with no strings attached. During the 1930s Depression, many states faced bankruptcy, and the Commonwealth regularly passed short Acts like this to keep essential services running until Tasmania's economy recovered.
