Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act provides a one-off financial grant from the Commonwealth to Tasmania during the early years of the Great Depression.

What it does:

Appropriates £250,000 per year for five years (starting 1 July 1929) to support Tasmania's state budget
Pays the money monthly in equal instalments
Draws funds from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the Commonwealth's main government account)

Who it affects:

Primarily the Tasmanian State Government, which receives the funds as "financial assistance"
Australian taxpayers, as the money comes from federal revenue

Why it matters: Enacted in December 1929 (shortly after the Wall Street Crash), this was emergency fiscal support to help Tasmania manage its finances during the economic downturn. It automatically expires after the five-year period—no complex ongoing obligations.
