Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises the Commonwealth Government to pay Tasmania £220,000 as financial assistance during 1928–1929.

What it does

The Grant: The federal government provides £220,000 to Tasmania. This is essentially a subsidy to help the state fund public services.
Where the money comes from: The Consolidated Revenue Fund (the government's main bank account containing tax revenue). The Act legally appropriates (sets aside) this money for Tasmania.
How it's paid: The sum is split into 12 equal monthly instalments paid throughout the financial year ending 30 June 1929, rather than as a single lump sum.

Why it matters

This is an early example of horizontal fiscal equalisation — the principle that the federal government gives extra funding to smaller states (like Tasmania) that have limited ability to raise their own revenue but still face high costs for infrastructure and services across a large island.
