What this law does

This Act authorises the Commonwealth Government to pay Tasmania £85,000 (in 1922 currency) as financial assistance for the 1922–23 financial year.

Key details

The grant: £85,000 is appropriated from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the government’s main account) specifically to help Tasmania’s budget.
Payment method: The Federal Treasurer has discretion to pay this either as a single lump sum or in multiple instalments throughout the year.
Time limit: The money is allocated for the year ending 30 June 1923 only.

Why it matters

This is an early example of the Commonwealth providing direct budget support to a state. In 1922, Tasmania faced unique economic challenges as Australia’s smallest state, and this grant allowed it to maintain services without raising taxes or cutting spending. It represents the beginning of the federal financial assistance framework that still operates today through GST distributions and other grants.
