This order removes a duty-free concession (tariff exemption) for importing vermiculite manufacturing plant into Australia.
Previously, businesses could import this equipment without paying customs duty under Tariff Concession Order 0516048. This revocation cancels that exemption effective 27 July 2011.
The affected equipment includes industrial machinery such as:
- Screeners, blenders, and processors
- Dryers, crushers, and grinders
- Conveyors and tanks
Who is affected: Importers of specialized plant equipment used to manufacture vermiculite (a mineral used in construction and horticulture).
Why it matters: From the effective date, importers must pay customs duties on this equipment, increasing costs compared to the previous duty-free arrangement. The government determined this equipment should no longer qualify for concessional treatment, likely because comparable goods are now manufactured locally or the original justification for the concession no longer applies.
