This order cancels a previous tax break for importing a specific type of plastic resin used to make water bottles and food packaging.
What it does
The order revokes Tariff Concession Order 0509438, which previously allowed certain polyethylene terephthalate (PET) copolymer to be imported without paying standard customs duty. The cancellation takes effect from 20 March 2007.
Who is affected
Businesses importing PET copolymer that meets these specific technical criteria:
- Intrinsic viscosity between 0.75 and 0.87 decilitres per gram
- Complies with ASTM 4603 standards
- Acetaldehyde levels below 1 part per million
Why it matters
Importers of this specific plastic resin will now need to pay full customs duties instead of benefiting from the concessional rate. This increases the cost of importing these goods into Australia.
