What this does
This order removes a duty-free import concession for specific toilet brushes. Under the previous Tariff Concession Order 0834522, importers could bring in stainless steel toilet brushes (complete with stand and holder) without paying customs duty. This revocation cancels that benefit.
Who it affects
Businesses importing toilet brushes classified under customs code 9603.90.00 with stainless steel casings. These importers will now need to pay standard customs duty rates instead of receiving the previous exemption.
When it applies
The revocation took effect on 12 May 2009 (even though the order was signed on 9 July 2009).
Why it matters
Tariff concessions exist to give Australian businesses duty-free access to imported goods when no suitable Australian-made alternatives exist. Revoking the concession suggests either that local manufacturers now produce equivalent goods, or that the original concession no longer serves its intended purpose. This increases import costs for the affected products.
