What this does: This order removes a tax break (tariff concession) for importing specific types of plastic sheets into Australia.
The affected goods: Glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) sheets — a type of clear, rigid plastic used in signage, packaging, and manufacturing. The order applies only to sheets meeting exact specifications:
- Density of 1270 kg/m³ at 23°C
- Thickness between 1-6 mm
- Specific sheet sizes (e.g., 183 cm × 91.5 cm, 183 cm × 122 cm, or 244 cm × 122 cm)
What changes: Importers of these specific PETG sheets must now pay standard customs duties instead of the reduced "concession" rate they enjoyed under Order TC 9408861 (which operated since November 1994). The revocation took effect on 7 April 2006.
Why it matters: This increases the cost of importing these specific plastic sheets, typically to protect Australian manufacturers who have started producing similar goods locally.
