What this does:
This order removes a previous tax break (called a tariff concession) that allowed certain steel tubes to be imported into Australia without paying the standard customs duty (import tax).
Who it affects:
Companies importing rectangular hollow section steel tubes with a circumference greater than 1,100 millimetres (classified under tariff code 7306.61.00).
What changes:
Previously, these specific steel tubes could enter Australia under Tariff Concession Order 0614221 without duty. This revocation cancels that exemption. From 7 September 2007 onwards, importers must pay the normal customs duty on these goods.
Why it matters:
This increases the cost of importing these specific large steel tubes, likely to protect Australian steel manufacturers from overseas competition or to ensure proper duty collection on these products.
