What this does: This order cancels a previous customs duty exemption (tariff concession) for specific iron ore railway wagons. Importers must now pay standard duties on these goods instead of bringing them in duty-free.
The affected goods: Iron ore wagons meeting ALL six technical criteria:
- Railway gauge no wider than 1,070 millimetres
- Bottom dump discharge mechanism
- Unladen weight (tare) of 18 tonnes or less
- Length of 11 metres or less
- Hopper width of 3 metres or less
- Height from support frame of 2.4 metres or less
- Classified under customs tariff code 8606.30.00
Who it affects: Mining companies and rail operators importing these narrow-gauge wagons.
Important timing: The cancellation takes effect from 14 July 2010 (before this order was made), meaning duties became payable on these wagons from that date onwards.
