This order removes a tax break for importing battery recycling equipment into Australia.
What changed:
Under the previous Tariff Concession Order 0613541 (from 2006), businesses could import battery recycling plant equipment—including crushers, conveyors, tanks, pumps, separators, blowers, and control panels—without paying customs duty (import taxes).
This order revokes (cancels) that concession. The equipment, classified under customs code 8479.82.00, will now attract standard customs duty unless another exemption applies.
Who is affected:
- Companies importing machinery to recycle batteries
- Businesses that purchased this equipment relying on the duty-free status
Timing:
- The revocation took effect on 27 July 2011
- The final date for claiming the concession was 7 November 2011
Practical impact:
Importers of battery recycling plants now face higher costs, as they must pay import duties that were previously waived under the 2006 concession.
