This order removes a tax exemption for importing industrial equipment used to roast zinc.
Previously, businesses could import zinc roasting plant equipment without paying customs duty under an exemption (called a "tariff concession") granted in 2006. This order cancels that exemption, meaning import taxes now apply.
What equipment is affected?
The order covers complete zinc roasting plants and specific components including:
- Fluid bed roasters and calcine storers
- Pollution control equipment (dust removers, mercury removers, scrubbers, cyclones)
- Gas handling systems (dryers, converters, absorbers)
- Power distribution systems
- Refractories and precipitators
Who does this affect?
Companies importing zinc processing equipment into Australia. They must now pay standard customs duties (taxes on imports) on these goods.
Why does this matter?
This increases the cost of importing zinc roasting infrastructure, potentially affecting mining and metals processing projects. The change took effect on 13 July 2011.
