This document cancels a special import tax break (called a 'tariff concession') for industrial equipment used to manufacture sulfuric acid.
What it does:
- Revokes Tariff Concession Order 0516328 (originally granted in February 2006)
- Targets specific goods: Complete sulfuric acid manufacturing plants, including drying towers, blowers, boilers, filters, catalytic converters, burners, absorbers, tanks, and coolers
- Effective date: 27 July 2011
- Legal effect: Importers must now pay standard customs duties on this equipment (tariff classification 8419.89.90) instead of bringing it in duty-free
Why it matters:
Under Australia's customs system, tariff concessions are revoked when local manufacturers demonstrate they can produce equivalent goods. This change increases costs for businesses importing sulfuric acid production plant, while potentially benefiting domestic manufacturers of such heavy industrial equipment.
