What this does:
This order cancels a duty-free import permit (called a Tariff Concession Order) for specific steering parts used in trucks and commercial vehicles.
Who it affects:
Businesses that import heavy vehicle steering components, specifically:
- Torque rods
- Tie rods
- Ball sockets
- Drag links
- Steering columns
- Bushings
Why it matters:
Previously, these parts could enter Australia without customs duty under concession TC 0614563 (granted in 2007). From 27 April 2011, importers must pay standard import duties on these goods. Tariff concessions are only granted when no local manufacturer makes equivalent products; revoking one usually means local production now exists or the original concession was granted in error.
