This order removes a special import tax discount (called a tariff concession) for large street sweepers.
What it does:
- Revokes a previous tax break: It cancels Tariff Concession Order 0712626, which previously allowed certain street sweepers to be imported into Australia at a reduced customs duty rate (or duty-free).
Which goods are affected:
- Suction-type street sweepers with a waste container (hopper) capacity of at least 3.6 cubic metres
- Classified under customs tariff code 8705.90.00
What this means:
- Importers must now pay the standard import duties on these machines instead of the reduced concession rate
- The change took effect on 29 October 2007 (backdated to this date)
Why it matters:
This removes a price advantage that imported sweepers previously held over Australian-made equipment, effectively protecting local manufacturers from overseas competition.
