This order cancels a previous import tax break (called a "tariff concession") for specific mining machinery.
What it does:
- Revokes Tariff Concession Order 0811921, which since 2008 had allowed duty-free import of "mined ore pellet plant" equipment
- This equipment includes industrial machinery like mixers, balling discs, kilns, coolers, grates, control modules and hoppers (used to process raw ore into pellets)
- From 27 July 2011, importers must now pay customs duty on these goods (tariff classification 8474.80.00)
Who made it:
Michael Perry, acting as a delegate of the Chief Executive Officer, using powers under section 269SD(1A) of the Customs Act 1901.
Why it matters:
If you were importing this specific pelletizing plant equipment, this order removes your exemption from import taxes, making the equipment more expensive to bring into Australia.
