This order cancels a special import duty exemption for specific mining equipment. What it does: It revokes Tariff Concession Order 0201447 (made on 10 May 2002), which previously allowed "roof support machines" used in longwall coal mining to be imported with reduced or zero customs duty. Who it affects: Importers of these specialized machines (classified under customs tariff code 8479.89.90). From 7 December 2005, these goods must be imported under standard duty rates instead of the concessional rate. Why it matters: This increases the cost of importing critical safety equipment used in underground coal mining operations, as the tariff concession (a kind of discount on import taxes) no longer applies.
