What this does
This order removes a tax break (called a tariff concession) for importing small wind-powered generators into Australia.
The details
Previously, Tariff Concession Order 0916497 allowed wind-powered generators with an output of 2 kilowatts or less to be imported without paying customs duty (or at a reduced rate). This Revocation Order cancels that benefit, meaning these items now attract standard import duties.
Who it affects
- Importers of small wind-powered generators (customs classification 8502.31.90)
- Retailers and installers of small-scale wind energy systems
- Consumers purchasing imported small wind generators (who may face higher prices)
Why it matters
This increases the cost of importing small renewable energy equipment, removing a financial incentive that previously made these generators cheaper to bring into Australia.
