This Tariff Concession Order allows certain electrical switchgear cabinets to be imported into Australia at a reduced customs duty rate (or duty-free).
Specifically, it covers switchgear cabinets used for electrical power distribution that meet both of these technical requirements:
- Rated for 7.2 kilovolts (kV) or higher (high-voltage equipment); and
- Rated for 400 amperes (amps) or greater (high-current capacity).
Who this affects: Importers bringing in industrial-grade switchgear for electricity substations, power plants, or heavy industrial facilities.
How it works: The goods are classified under customs code 8537.20.90 and qualify for Item 50 in Schedule 4 of the Customs Tariff (the list of duty rates). This means eligible importers can apply this concession when lodging import declarations, reducing the cost of bringing this equipment into Australia. The concession took effect on 6 April 2010 and remains valid until revoked.
