What this does: This order allows small wind-powered electricity generators to be imported into Australia without paying customs duty (or at a significantly reduced rate).
Who it affects: Businesses or individuals importing wind turbines with a power output of 2 kilowatts or less that fall under customs tariff code 8502.31.90.
Why it matters: Normally, imported goods attract import duties (taxes). This concession removes that cost for small-scale wind generation equipment, making renewable energy technology more affordable and encouraging its adoption.
The fine print:
- Covered goods: Wind-powered generators up to 2kW
- Effective from: 14 May 2009
- How long it lasts: Until the government officially cancels it (revokes it) or sets a specific end date
- Legal basis: Made under the Customs Act 1901 by a delegate of the Australian Border Force CEO
