What this does:
This order gives a customs duty discount (called a tariff concession) on specific steel imports into Australia.
The goods affected:
- Aluminium-coated steel sheet (whether in rolls or flat sheets)
- Identified by customs code 7210.69.00
What it means for importers:
Instead of paying the standard import tax rate, eligible importers can bring in this steel under Item 50 of Schedule 4 to the Customs Tariff Act 1995. This usually means paying less duty or no duty at all, provided no Australian manufacturer makes a locally-produced substitute.
When it applies:
From 8 December 2008 onwards, and it stays in force until the government cancels it or replaces it.
