This Tariff Concession Order allows specific industrial equipment used in alumina refineries to be imported into Australia without paying customs duty (or at a reduced rate).
What goods are covered?
The concession applies to "digestion modules" for alumina plants, specifically:
- Heat interchangers
- Slurry coolers
- Blow-off and/or relief vessels
These items fall under customs classification 8419.89.90 (machinery for industrial chemical processes).
Who benefits?
Companies importing equipment for alumina production facilities (the process of extracting aluminum from bauxite ore).
How does it work?
The goods are entered under Schedule 4, Item 50 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995. This part of the tariff provides duty-free or concessional entry for specific goods when no suitable Australian-made alternatives are available.
The order took effect on 14 February 2007 and remains in force until revoked.
